Ethanol Protest Continues
100 people a month are being denied service by common carriers at the Minneapolis airport. There are about 1200 cabbies working the airport, of which about 900 are Somali Muslims, some of those Muslim cabbies are refusing to take as passengers people carrying alcohol or accompanied by dogs.
St. Bernards need not apply.
A made-to-order religious edict fatwa issued by the Muslim American Society prohibiting “taxi drivers from carrying passengers with alcohol” is the proximate cause. What is the Muslim American Society? It is the American branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, who have a straightforward mission statement: “Allah is our objective. The Prophet is our leader. The Qur’an is our law. Jihad is our way. Dying in the way of Allah is our highest hope.”
The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports: Airport taxi flap about alcohol has deeper significance

…The Muslim Brotherhood was founded in Egypt in 1928 by Hassan al-Banna. The Tribune described the Brotherhood as “the world’s most influential Islamic fundamentalist group.”Because of its hard-line beliefs, the U.S. Brotherhood has been an increasingly divisive force within Islam in America, fueling the often bitter struggle between moderate and conservative Muslims,” the paper reported.
The international Muslim Brotherhood “preaches that religion and politics cannot be separated and that governments eventually should be Islamic,” according to the Tribune. U.S. members emphasize that they follow American laws, but want people here to convert to Islam so that one day a majority will support a society governed by Islamic law.
…[Hassan] Mohamud [vice president of the Minnesota MAS chapter, says] …Americans need to learn about Islamic law because the Muslim population here is growing. That’s why the proposed two-tier system for airport cabdrivers is important, he says. It could become a national model for accommodating Islam in areas ranging from housing to contractual arrangements to the workplace.

Daniel Pipes notes here that one MAS goal is to replace the Constitution with the Koran. I’ve learned all I need to, thanks.
The good news appears to be that the Metropolitan Airport Commission isn’t having any of this. As the AP notes today:
|
Officials at Minneapolis-St. Paul International airport are proposing stiffer penalties – including suspension of an airport taxi license – to Muslim cab drivers who refuse service to passengers toting alcohol or service dogs.
Officials on Wednesday asked the Metropolitan Airport Commission for permission to hold public hearings on a proposal that would suspend the airport licenses of cab drivers who refuse service for reasons other than safety concerns. The penalties would also apply to drivers who refuse a fare because a trip is too short.
Drivers would have their airport licenses suspended 30 days for the first offense and revoked for two years after the second offense, according to the proposal.
“Our expectation is that if you’re going to be driving a taxi at the airport, you need to provide service to anybody who wants it,” commission spokesman Patrick Hogan said.
…”We want the drivers to know about the policy in advance, so that if they don’t think they can work under these conditions, they have the option of not renewing their license,” Hogan said.

I do not know the exact governmental status of the Minneapolis Airport, but I am certain it receives taxpayer monies. Also, the cabbies receive their licenses from a government under a definition of common carrier – which is essentially what they are trying to change.
We clearly have a separation of church and state issue. Where is the ACLU?
